RESPITE
At A Special Design we recognise the challenges that families may be faced with when trying to support a child on the autism spectrum. Equally, we also recognise the importance for opportunities of respite for parents/ carers and family members. We believe that it is important for parents/ carers and family members to have the time to do what is needed.
Following an agreement with you, we can support your child to attend local activities in the community, clubs (specialist/ non specialist), or attend local areas such as park etc.
To prepare your child, we provide personalised social stories and transition resources to help them understand what will be happening.
All support workers will be carefully matched with each child and we will look at factors such as interests.
PLEASE NOTE - we recommend for your child to have a minimum of 2 different support workers. This is to encourage your child to build relationships with multiple adults and will help in moments where one support worker is unavailable
All of our support workers have an enhanced DBS (formally known as CRB), training about autism and strategies to support autistic people. On top of this training, all new staff carry out at least two trial sessions with more experienced members of the team before they are able to accompany young people in the community by themselves.
